I was there for the party and completed that quest but didn't grab the stone when I was there. Now when I go back to get the stone the door is locked and needs a key to get in. Thought I was being clever by waiting until later in the game to complete this quest, when I have most of the locations available for fast travel. Saved Thalmor Embassy/reeking cave for last, and lo and behold there is no stone in the bedroom (as it was pre patch) or in the cave. I have visited every other location previously to double check ...I might be wrong but i think a later patch moved the stone to the cave you make your escape through, near a troll (so that the stone would be available outside of the embassy quest). Might be an unofficial patch for PC though but you might want to check.
