I also have a walled area its attatched to that i set a stockpile for haygrass and kibble inside the walled area as well as animal sleeping spots. The real answer to to the question is to make kibble (Or grow hay for herbivores). It's cheap to make, can be stored forever and eaten by all animal types (Also by humans in an emergency).
