Pathfinder fighting defensively
Defensive fighting (DF) question. When does it kick in? I tought that you have to activate it (click on it) and make an attack and the attack will guilt as attack with defensive fighting (+2 AC and - 4 attack rolls). But sometimes when a character starts its round and I deactivate the DF and then make an attack the attack still guilts as with DF.Combat Expertise page 119. Bottom part of the entry "You can only choose to use this feat when you declare that you are making an attack or a full-attack action with a melee weapon. The effects of this feat last until your next turn. Fighting defensively as a Full-Round Action. You can choose to fight defensively when taking a full-attack action.

If you look at it thematically, it would make sense for the character's swing to be less precise while fighting defensively (and thus give a penalty on the attack roll, resulting in a higher chance of miss). AC goes from 24 (with a flat 20 AC) to 35 when fighting defensively, and 39 AC when fighting defensively as a full attack action. If we put on mithral full plate (a bit more expensive, and with 10ft less movement) it goes up to 38/42 AC, but since 35 is comfortably 'blue' (in the bench-pressing spreadsheet), I don't think it's a problem.
Also of note - there is a Trait which gives +2 to ALL Concentration checks. (While Combat Casting only gives a +4 to cast defensively.) I take it with many of my casters. People like Shocking Grasp because it's solid damage for a low level spell and doesn't give a saving throw (and Magi tend to have a mediocre save DCs).To defensively cast a spell you make a concentration check (1d20+caster level+casting mod+any other bonuses you may have) against a DC of 15+double the spell level. When you make an attack action or a full-attack action, you can choose to fight defensively, taking a -4 to attack rolls for +2 AC. This doesn't otherwise "use up" an action, it merely modifies the existing action.To clarify, the way I read it is that casting a spell is a standard action and attacking is a standard action. Casting on the defensive is a part of casting a spell and is not an action itself. Fighting defensively is a special attack action and is a standard action. You cannot fight defensively without making an attack (if I recall).
