Pre ban AR-15 serial numbers are unique sets of markings found on rifles manufactured before September 1994. These special formatting rules include alpha numeric combinations with specific letter prefix codes such as SP1, XM15 etc. Pre ban rifles usually have a “COLT AR-15” roll-mark or in some cases the older “AR-15” designation.3. Recently some serial numbers have left with one or two letters followed by FIVE numbers. The last numbers are either 5's or 0's. 99.9% of these are post-ban. 4.
